Tsunami advisory issued after northern Japan earthquake

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate and Miyagi prefectures in northern Japan at around 5 PM local time on Sunday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for Iwate Prefecture, warning that waves could reach up to one meter. Small tsunamis of about 20 centimeters were already observed at the ports of Kuji and Ofunato. Residents have been advised to stay away from seashores, as tsunami waves may surge repeatedly and rise suddenly. Authorities urged caution and continuous monitoring of local updates.
