
Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record and the largest ever to hit Jamaica. Despite weakening to a category 3 storm, Melissa made landfall in Cuba early Wednesday morning with maximum sustained winds of approximately 120 miles per hour.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared the island a "disaster area" and authorities warned residents to remain sheltered over continued flooding and landslide risk, as dangerous weather persisted even as the hurricane's worst moved on.
