People clad in the costumes of the ancient masked dance drama called "Gigaku" have paraded in Japan's western prefecture of Nara, showcasing performances along the way. Gigaku is said to have been introduced from the continent to Japan about 1,400 years ago during the Asuka Period.
The procession played out on Saturday in the village of Asuka, where a project is underway to reenact gigaku. About 50 people in colorful garments walked through the village to the sounds of drums and flutes. They displayed a dynamic performance on the grounds of Asukadera Temple, which was built in the late sixth century.
