One month after a critical report recommended its closure, Marseille’s juvenile prison has completed initial work ahead of a full renovation programme set to begin in October. The facility, long criticized for unsanitary conditions and inadequate food and education, remains under scrutiny despite signs of improvement.

Staffing shortages persist, with around 20 percent of posts vacant, adding strain in an environment already marked by tension and violence. Authorities say the recent report has accelerated investment and resources, though concerns remain over mental health care and long-term planning for the centre.
