United Nations sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program came back into force Sunday. The measures had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal in return for Iran limiting its nuclear activities.  The sanctions include a ban on uranium enrichment, reprocessing, and an arms embargo. Iran responded by suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Hardliners have called for withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, raising tensions with the US and Europe. The economic impact is unclear, as many foreign companies already left after US sanctions in 2018. Tehran maintains the sanctions will have minimal effect.
