Climate change is helping German vineyards produce riper grapes and higher-quality wines, narrowing the gap with Italy and Spain. Rising temperatures have brought earlier harvests as sugar levels in grapes increase faster than in previous decades. However, experts warn that this does not always mean the fruit is fully mature, creating new production challenges.
Despite improved quality, German winemakers are struggling to compete with cheaper imports. Production costs remain high, with bottles priced at €12–15 compared to as little as €2.50 for French wines. The industry now faces a mixed future, where climate change is both an advantage and a risk, while international competition continues to weigh heavily on sales.
