Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano erupted early Friday, sending lava fountains more than 150 meters high within the Halemaumau summit crater, the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said on its website.
The eruption, the 33rd in the ongoing series that began on December 23, 2024, produced a plume reaching 3,000 meters. Lava remains confined to the crater, and nearby airports are not expected to be affected. Authorities warned visitors that the summit area is closed and cautioned about additional hazards, including ground cracking, rockfalls, and unstable crater walls.
