The Nasa Earth Observatory shared pictures of what it calls "a brand new island in Alaska": the small mountain Prow Knob was once encircled by the Alsek Glacier but this summer, they lost contact and Prow Knob is now surrounded by the waters of Alsek Lake. Based on satellite imagery, separation occurred sometime between July 13 and August 6, saidNasa.

Both arms of the Alsek Glacier have retreated more than 3 miles since 1984. In recent decades, melting has accelerated significantly as the climate warms.
