For the third consecutive year, toxic blue-green algae has blanketed much of Lough Neagh, the UK and Ireland’s largest lake. The blooms, fuelled by farm runoff, sewage, industrial waste and climate change, now spread so widely they can be seen from space.
Mary O'Hagan, swimmer, said "I'm an open water swimmer who has been absolutely unable to access my training ground for the past three years because of the massive influx of pollution which has caused one of the worst blue-green algal blooms we've ever seen on Lough Neagh."
The pollution has devastated fishing, water sports, and raised concerns about drinking water safety.
