Japan marked the coming-of-age of Prince Hisahito, 19-year old nephew of Emperor Naruhito and second in line to the throne, with a crown-wearing ceremony at the Imperial Palace on Saturday. The 19-year-old received a black silk and lacquer crown in the “Kakan-no-Gi” ritual, the first such ceremony for a male member of the Imperial family in 40 years, last held for his father.

The event signaled the formal start of his adult life within the Imperial household, with additional rituals and celebrations scheduled through the evening.
