The season's first auction of red snow crabs was held on Thursday at a port in Kami Town in Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan. The crab fishing season opened on Monday. Kasumi port is the only one in the Kansai region involved in red snow crab fishing.

The crabs live in cold waters around 1,000 meters deep, and are known for their sweetness. They are auctioned as soon as they are unloaded. The head of a local crab fishing association said it is focused on managing crab resources, as well as maintaining freshness and quality. Red snow crab fishing will continue through May next year.
