A magnitude 6 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar and Nangarhar provinces just before midnight on Sunday, killing at least 812 people and injuring more than 2,800, officials said, with authorities warning the toll could rise.

Military helicopters landed in villages to deliver medicine and transport the injured to Nangarhar Hospital as rescue teams searched through rubble for survivors. Government spokesman ZabihullahMujahid said the disaster has further strained the resources of the war-torn nation, already facing poverty, reduced humanitarian aid, and the return of hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees from neighbouring countries.
