Through Guyana's interior, the historic red dirt road known as "The Trail" winds through rainforest, plains, and hills, linking Georgetown to Lethem on the Brazilian border. The 500-kilometer route is being upgraded into a major highway. The renovation is a major undertaking for Guyana, which goes to the polls September 1.

The nearly $1 billion project includes four highway sections and about 50 bridges, with the most optimistic completion date in 2030. For now, truckers tackle the Linden-Lethem road as it is, taking 15 hours end to end, and some don't make it.
