N.Korean defense chief denounces S.Korea-US joint drills

North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang-chol criticized the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise as a “provocation” in a statement published by the Rodong Sinmun.  He stated that the North Korean military’s mission is to protect national security from threats posed by Seoul and Washington.

While Pyongyang routinely condemns these joint drills, this year’s statement carries more weight as it came directly from the defense chief. Approximately half of the outdoor field maneuvers for the upcoming joint exercise have been postponed until September. Analysts say North Korea is adjusting its response while monitoring South Korea’s actions. The statement was issued two days after North Korea dismantled border loudspeakers targeting the South.
