Intrusive Pacific algae overwhelm Algeria beaches, triggering cleanups

At a beach near the capital of Algeria, brown algae native to the Pacific Ocean cover the golden sand, posing a threat to the ecosystems. At the request of government, several volunteers and charities have stepped in to help clear beaches swarmed by the seaweed.

The algae originate from temperate waters around Japan and the Korean peninsula in the northwest Pacific Ocean. One of the marine engineer and biologist said the significant algae proliferation invade the habitats of other algae in the seabed, leading the disappearance of some species like the native fish.
