To ensure national food security and earn foreign income through exports, fish farming is being carried out across the country. However, due to heavy rains and flooding, the Department of Fisheries has issued precautionary guidelines to minimize damage.

The department advises to strengthen pond embankments, especially in low-lying areas, using sandbags. It also urges to use nets or fencing to prevent fish from escaping during floods, and to protect ponds near rivers with bamboo fences and sandbags to prevent erosion.

It also suggests to prepare boats, fish nets, and equipment in advance to relocate fish if needed, especially breeding stock. The suggestions also include to move fish feed and equipment to safe, dry areas, to continue regular feeding to keep fish calm and prevent escape, to regularly check water outlets and overflow points, while ensuring communication systems are in place for emergency updates.

Fish farmers are advised to stay updated with weather warnings from state-owned radio and newspapers, and share information among fish farmers, and to contact nearby Fisheries Offices in case of emergency.
