New exhibition celebrates Japanese kimonos

A new exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne is celebrating the iconic garment from its more traditional roots to some daring modern designs.

This exhibition displays historically significant and visually dynamic examples of costume and fashion from Japanese history, and establishes a creative lineage to the most experimental and innovative fashion designers of today. There’s up to 70 kimonos through the exhibition, and then there’s Western-inspired fashion.
