Life is pink': The Albania town where everything's coming up roses

In Permet, deep in the spectacular Vjosa Valley of southern Albania, roses rule supreme, whether used to make perfumes, flavoured water or the Turkish delights sought out by thousands of sweet-toothed tourists. In this small town, roses are everywhere, in public spaces and courtyards.

The meticulously selected petals are used to make rosewater through an artisanal distillation process, which is then used to make perfumes, jams and, above all, loukoums, a confectionery that accompanies every important life ceremony in this region.
