Russian FM Sergei Lavrov meets Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Rio

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and China's top diplomat Wang Yi hold a bilateral meeting in Rio de Janeiro on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting.

Wang highlighted the strategic leadership of both countries and said the two sides must continue to work together to boost cooperation in various areas. Lavrov praises China as "one of the most important actors who are carrying out change in the world", and adds that Moscow and Beijing bear a "special responsibility" as leaders of "the movement for justice and equality".

The two ministers discussed enhancing cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the G20. They also exchanged views on issues related to Iran's nuclear program and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
