The Ministry of Health held a farewell and honoring ceremony at the Ministry’s meeting hall in the morning on April 15, to honor the Bhutanese Emergency Medical Team, which is concluding its mission and returning home. The ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Health Dr. Thet Khaing Win, on behalf of the Chairman of  National Disaster Management Committee.

At the start of the ceremony, attendees observed a one-minute silence to mourn and honor those who lost their lives in the recent Mandalay earthquake.

Following this, the Union Minister, in his address on behalf of the Chairman of National Disaster Management Committee, expressed heartfelt gratitude. He stated that, under the guidance of His Majesty the King of Bhutan, the Bhutanese government swiftly deployed the emergency medical team to Myanmar. From April 1st to 14th, the team provided treatment and surgeries to over 3,000 emergency patients at the temporary field hospital set up at Paung Laung Stadium in Pyinmana, within the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area. The Union Minister extended deep appreciation on behalf of the affected families, to His Majesty the King, the government, and the people of Bhutan.

He went on to note the long-standing cooperation in the field of medicine between Myanmar and Bhutan. From 1995 to the early 2000s, Bhutanese medical students studied at University of Medicine 1 in Yangon and obtained specialist degrees. Likewise, Myanmar specialists have served in Bhutan. Several of the Bhutanese specialists who joined the recent emergency mission had previously studied at University of Medicine 1, and some Myanmar doctors currently serving in Bhutan also took part in the medical relief efforts. The Union Minister expressed great pride and joy in this continued collaboration.

Following the speech, the Union Minister presented a certificate of honor and commemorative gifts to the Bhutanese emergency medical team. Mr. Tashi Wangyal, the team leader, presented a souvenir in return on behalf of the Bhutanese team.

Mr. Tashi Wangyal then gave a speech expressing gratitude on behalf of the Bhutanese medical team.
