Myanmar traditional “Peaceful Thingyan” was celebrated in Nay Pyi Taw on Sunday with the participation of Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and wife.

On their arrival at the Nay Pyi Taw Mayor Pandal, the Prime Minister and wife and party sprinkled Thingyan water to the attendees with Eugenia Sprigs. This was followed by demonstration of Thanakha paste application customs as part of the efforts to be listed in the Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The Prime Minister and party later proceeded to the Nay Pyi Taw Splash Walk where the attendees celebrate the traditional water sprinkling with Eugenia Sprigs. The celebration also featured the Thingyan Festivals across six eras of Pyu, Bagan, Innwa, Kone Baung and Yadanapon.

During the visit, the Prime Minister and wife presented gifts to the elder persons and encouraged the performance of good deeds such as shampooing and manicuring. The Nay Pyi Taw Splash Walk is being celebrated in line with the Myanmar traditions and customs including the charity feast.

Myanmar traditional Thingyan was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in December 2024, and plans were made to celebrate this year’s Thingyan in a significant manner.

Due to the extensive loss of lives and properties caused by the severe Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28th, rehabilitation and reconstruction works are being carried out in the quake-hit areas.

To show sympathy to those affected by the powerful earthquake, this year’s Thingyan Festival is set to celebrate as pleasant and peaceful Thingyan in line with the traditional customs, excluding the joyous performances.
