In a rare move, the UK Parliament was recalled from its Easter recess on April 12 to pass emergency legislation aimed at intervening in the operations of British Steel's Scunthorpe plant. This intervention comes after the plant's owner, Jingye Group, announced plans to close the facility, jeopardizing approximately 2,700 jobs and the UK's last remaining blast furnaces.

The proposed Steel Industry (Special Measures) Bill would grant the government temporary powers to oversee British Steel's operations, including directing procurement of raw materials essential for maintaining blast furnace operations.
