After the severe earthquake occurred on March 28, experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, as well as the Department of Irrigation and Water Utilization Management, conducted inspections to evaluate the strength and safety of water reservoirs.
They also performed measurements using a geotechnical testing machine to determine if any damage had occurred to the dams. Necessary repairs are being prioritized according to the results of the inspections. On April 8, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, U Min Naung, along with Deputy Minister U Bo Bo Kyaw, visited the Paung Laung Reservoir in Zeyathiri Township.
During their visit, they inspected the water storage inside the reservoir, the structural integrity of the dam, and the spillway. Officials reported that the earthquake had caused some cracks along the top of the dam, approximately 3 feet long, but no major safety issues were identified.
These cracks are being filled and repaired, and the safety of the dam is being ensured. Following the inspections, the Union Minister discussed the necessary actions with the relevant officials. Then, the Union Minister inspected Paung Laung Dam (Awayyar Dam) and gave the necessary instructions to the responsible officials. Later, the Union Minister and officials met with the departmental officials and farmers at the systematic agricultural farm irrigated from Chaung-Ma-Nge Dam in Thit Seint Pin Village of Lewe Township.
During the meeting, officials reported that the earthquake had caused damage to the canal of the water supply system, and repairs were underway. They also explained the plans for water distribution during the summer paddy season. During a meeting with the farmers, the Union Minister discussed the importance of cooperation to ensure fair distribution of water for irrigation, and the need for systematic management of resources.
He also explained the plans to support the farmers in planting a successful monsoon rice crop and connecting them with rice mill operators to purchase their rice. After that, the Union Minister and officials traveled to Yan Aung Myin Dam in Dakkhinathiri Township to inspect the damage to the embankment of the No. 3 dam caused by the earthquake. They also inspected the strength of the main dam structure. The officials reported that the inspections were conducted thoroughly, and necessary discussions regarding repairs and safety measures were held.
