Turkiye’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) held an extraordinary congress to elect a new party leader. The congress took place two weeks after the start of nationwide protests following the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The session was held amid ongoing political tension.

Party members described the leadership vote as a measure to maintain the party’s internal governance and address what they view as challenges related to judicial and political developments.

The CHP has stated its intention to prevent the possible appointment of trustees and to prepare for the upcoming general election.
