Mount Marapi in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province erupted on 3rd April, sending an ash column 1.5 kilometers above its peak. The severity of the eruption has been rated at level two, the third-highest level, which involves a three-kilometer exclusion zone. Marapi is one of the country’s most active volcanoes.

An eruption of Marapi killed at least 24 climbers in December 2023, most of them are university students. Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation, experiences frequent eruptions due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an area of intense volcanic and seismic activity.
