The Paris-Milan rail service reopened after 19 months of disruption caused by a rockfall in the Maurienne Valley in the French Alps.
Trains departed with high occupancy, reflecting strong demand for the restored connection. Since ticket sales reopened, bookings increased by 8% compared to 2023, with an initial occupancy rate of around 70%.
The service, which included three daily return trips, replaced temporary bus routes that operated during the closure. Passengers cited convenience and environmental benefits as key factors in choosing the train over air travel. The reopening restored a crucial Franco-Italian transport link, welcomed by both travelers and railway operators.
