Applying Thanakha paste is one of the cherished tradition of Myanmar people, and the practice of Thanakha Culture in Myanmar is going to submit to the UNESCO for gaining recognition in the Intangible Cultural List.

Myanmar is actively working for submission of the nomination dossier, with campaigns and activities to promote the tradition. As part of the efforts, a competition on applying Thanakha paste took place in Than Phyu Zayat Township of Mon State on March 15th.

30 students from basic education schools across the township participated in the competition, along with the cultural performances. Thanakha was initially proposed for inclusion on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in March 2020, but the application was rejected for being incomplete.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture is working to submit a new nomination by the end of March.
