The second meeting of the Central Committee for Myanmar Special Economic Zones for the 2024-2025 fiscal year was held at the conference hall of the Ministry of Commerce in Nay Pyi Taw on March 11.
The meeting was attended by the Central Committee Chairman, Vice Chairman of the State Administration Council, Deputy Prime Minister, Vice-Senior General Soe Win, who delivered the opening remarks. In his opening speech, the SAC Vice Chairman stated that the implementation of special economic zones must be based on the Myanmar Special Economic Zone Law and its regulations, enacted in 2014, and carried out in accordance with the stipulated provisions.
He emphasized that these efforts should also align with the current situation of the country. Given the present geopolitical circumstances, he noted that the development of special economic zones within the country should not be viewed solely from an economic perspective but must also consider political aspects.
Therefore, he urged the committee members to integrate political and economic considerations in the implementation of the ongoing Thilawa Special Economic Zone, as well as the future Kyaukphyu and Dawei Special Economic Zones. He further highlighted that investments in these special economic zones should align with the directive of the Prime Minister to increase exports, which is a key priority. When inviting investments into the special economic zones, priority should be given to those that produce exportable goods for international markets etc.
Following this, the Central Committee Secretary (1), Union Minister of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Dr. Kan Zaw, provided a detailed briefing on the special economic zones and investment-related matters concerning the Dawei Special Economic Zone, including updates from the Prime Minister’s recent visit. Subsequently, the Central Committee Secretary (2), Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn, presented a report on the progress and implementation of decisions made during the first meeting of the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
Next, the chairpersons of the management committees of the Thilawa, Kyaukphyu, and Dawei Special Economic Zones presented their reports to the Central Committee meeting, which were read, discussed, and approved. Thereafter, Union Ministers and other attendees provided suggestions and discussed ongoing activities related to the special economic zones, addressing relevant sectoral issues.
Following these discussions, the Secretary of the Central Working Committee for Myanmar Special Economic Zones presented the draft resolutions of the second meeting of the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which were read, submitted, and approved.
