Indian artisans keep traditional toy-making alive, despite rising challenges. In Channapatna, around 2,500 artisans continue producing wooden toys, holding onto a centuries-old craft amid competition from cheaper plastic alternatives.

The industry, once supported by government-run training programs, now struggles with a lack of new artisans and financial pressure. Artisans have called for the return of workshops, health insurance, and relief from the recent GST hike, which has increased from 4 to 12 percent.

They also highlight the safety of their toys compared to harmful Chinese imports.
