With the aim of raising greater awareness of consumer interests and emphasizing and implementing consumer rights, a commemorative ceremony for World Consumer Rights Day was held at the City Hall in Taunggyi on March 10.
During the ceremony, Shan State Government Chief Minister U Aung Aung stated that Consumers International (CI), an international consumer organization, has been designating an annual theme to encourage countries worldwide to prioritize and address consumer protection seriously.
He noted that this year’s World Consumer Rights Day theme has been set as "A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles." He emphasized that the first group that should participate in this just transition is the entrepreneurs. Industries, in their daily production, distribution of goods, and provision of services, should adopt methods that reduce or completely eliminate harm to consumers and the environment.
By transforming production processes and creating job opportunities, they should contribute to sustainable daily living while fostering environmentally friendly production and service industries that preserve the natural environment.
Following this, a video clip showcasing the activities of the Consumer Affairs Department was presented. The Shan State Consumer Affairs Department Head U Shwe Phyu, provided explanations regarding consumer protection awareness.
It was also reported that the Chief Minister and officials toured an exhibition within the hall, which included a consumer protection awareness booth, displays of local products from Shan State, and value-added product exhibits.
