




Construction of the 1,903 feet long Gyaing (Kawkareik) Bridge near Kawkareik township in Kayin State has been completed and the opening ceremony was held on March 9 in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Armed Forces Day.
The ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Construction U Myo Thant together with Chief Minister U Saw Myint Oo and concerned officials. After formal opening of the newly constructed bridge, the Union Minister unveiled the stone inscription of the facility and sprinkled with scented water.
They then strolled along the newly constructed bridge. The Gyaing (Kawkareik) Bridge is located on the East-West Economic Corridor with the load capacity of 60 tonnes per vehicle. Constructed under the JICA loan program, this new facility could benefit for convenience of the locals, providing rapid trade flow. Currently, 1,575 feet long Atthanyan Bridge and 2,615 feet long Gyaing (ZarthaPyin) Bridge are being implemented under the low interest loan of JICA.
Upon completion, it will bring smooth transportation to Mawlamyine Township, Mon State via Myawaddy-Hpa-an road and connects to the Thilawa Special Economic Zone in Yangon. During the construction period, job opportunities were created for the locals along with the supports of modern technology and experiences to the local engineers.
For harmonizing development gaps between regions and states and ensuring smooth transportation access, the Department of Bridge under the Ministry of Construction is carrying out the tasks for construction of new roads while upgrading and renovating the new facilities through collaboration with local departmental officials.
