Bank Indonesia (BI), the central bank, planned to release a new innovation in its Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), which will allow users to tap their phones on a reader for transportation payments, eliminating the need to scan the QR code with their phone.
Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor said in Jakarta that the central bank would release a new version of the QRIS, which will be compatible with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology starting in March this year.
The Deputy Governor explained that NFC technology would allow QRIS users to tap their phones on a reader to conduct payment transactions without needing to scan the QR code, as long as the funds are available in the users’ bank or e-wallet accounts.
She stated that the new NFC-based QRIS innovation and the Merchant Discount Rate reduction were part of the central bank’s blueprint for Indonesia’s payment system in 2030, aimed at boosting digitalization in public transportation.
