Candles Illuminate Winter Event in Northern Japan

In Akita’s Saruhannai area, thousands of candles lit up snow walls, creating a magical atmosphere during a two-day event in Yokote City. Despite record snowfalls across Japan, residents set up 2,500 candles along a 10-kilometer stretch connecting six communities.

Visitors strolled alongside the road to enjoy the warm glow. The event, which has been celebrated for 20 years, also featured snow animal statues and igloos. Though the tradition faces challenges due to an aging population, organizers hope to continue the annual celebration.
