Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru held a summit with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday. He emphasized the massive amount of Japanese investment in America. Ishiba told Trump Japanese automakers would be building new factories in the US.
He said "Japan has been the largest investor for the United States in the last five consecutive years, and is ready to further increase investment to the United States." Trump responded by saying his tax policies make the US an attractive destination for car manufacturers.
However, he told Ishiba the need to address an imbalance in trade relations. Trump said the US has "about a $100 billion deficit with Japan" which needs to work on that" down to even equality." Ishiba is the second foreign leader to meet Trump in person at the White House since the US president started his second term. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the first.
