South Korea's joint investigation team said it will ask a court for an extension of a warrant to detain impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol over his declaration of martial law.

The team, which includes the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, announced its intention on Monday morning as the detention warrant is set to expire later in the day.

The move comes after the team attempted to execute the warrant on Friday, but was blocked by the Presidential Security Service.

The investigators have repeatedly asked Yoon to comply with the warrant. The head of the PSS issued a statement on Sunday, saying that Yoon is a sitting South Korean president, and that he is guarded by the law.

The official also noted that complying with the execution of the warrant would mean that the PSS discard its duty to protect the president and would constitute an abandonment of its duties.
