


Union Minister for Health Dr. Thet Khaing Win attended the opening ceremony of Annual Leprosy Elimination Work Analysis Seminar at Myanmar Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Myanmar CDC on 26th December.
In his opening speech, the Union Minister highlighted the significant milestone of Myanmar in 2003 when Myanmar recorded less than one leprosy case in every 10,000 people. In 2023, a total of new 1,338 leprosy patients, 207 level-2 disabled persons and 38 new pediatric leprosy patients were discovered and received treatments.
In order to receive treatment in early stage, household contact examination and leprosy awareness raising activities are needed to be prioritized. Having Single Dose Rifampicin can prevent leprosy transmission among leprosy contacts.
Therefore, plans are underway to provide Single Dose Rifampicin, conducting household contact examination, the Union Minister added. A total of 180 officials and experts from the Ministry and relevant organizations attended the ceremony. The 2024 Annual Leprosy Elimination Work Analysis Seminar is set to be held for 3 days in Nay Pyi Taw.
