Bryde’s whales under first-class national protection in China are drawing both scientists and tourists to the waters off Weizhou Island, as the active period for the animal fell in December.

This period, usually spanning from December this year to April next year, sees the whales foraging and nurturing their young near the island in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Tourists and locals have flocked to the area to observe the whales and other marine creatures.

As more visitors come to watch Bryde’s whales, local authorities have issued a guidebook outlining proper whale-watching practices and encouraging people to observe in a scientific and respectful manner.
