The 120th anniversary of Department of Cooperatives was held at the Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development on Wednesday.
The cooperative system is a means to achieve common social and economic goals through collaboration among like-minded individuals. It was introduced in Myanmar in December 1904, when Mr. H. Fielding Hall was appointed as the first Registrar of Cooperative Societies, and his office was established in May Myo (Pyin Oo Lwin).
Director, Department of Cooperatives, Myo Aung said "For the sustainability of the cooperative system, which contributes to the socio-economic development of the people, we must provide the public and members with a broader understanding of the knowledge and benefits of cooperatives. We have achieved fruitful results through the implementation of the cooperative system, particularly in the agriculture and livestock sectors, benefiting both farmers and consumers."
During the ceremony, outstanding members of cooperative associations were awarded for their excellence in contributing to the socio-economic development of their respective regions.
Member, Shwe Nay Kyar Cooperative Association (Wakema Township), Win Bo said "As farmers, it was quite unfamiliar for us to cultivate sunflowers. However, during last year's cultivation season, I grew sunflowers and achieved yields exceeding our target. The Department of Cooperatives provided necessary assistance, including fertilizers. Based on the success of my farm, I shared my knowledge of sunflower cultivation with other farmers from various townships in the Ayeyawady Region. In the coming year, we aim to produce sunflower oil, using our yields as raw materials."
The Department of Cooperatives has been providing essential support to cooperative associations, including the establishment of capital, as well as providing crop species and inputs. Additionally, the Department helps secure markets for distributing the products of the cooperative associations.
