The opening ceremony of the workshop on the development of private forest plantations and basic timber-based industries was held at the Forestry Department's Ingyin Hall in Nay Pyi Taw on 2nd December and was attended by Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi, Deputy Minister U Min Thu, permanent secretaries, departmental officials, representatives from related organizations, timber-based industry associations, bamboo and rattan entrepreneurs, and private forest plantation owners.
In his opening speech, Union Minister U Khin Maung Yi highlighted that Myanmar's forest coverage stood at 42.19% in 2020 and is estimated to be 42.15% in 2025. To increase forest coverage, efforts are being made to conserve natural forests and establish forest plantations.
Additionally, public and private forest plantations are being developed to meet the raw material needs of basic timber-based industries. He noted that producing and exporting wood, bamboo, and rattan products using advanced technology to meet market demands would not only create more job opportunities but also contribute to national economic development.
He encouraged collaboration between the government and businesses to advance the development of the timber-based industries. Following the speech, the Union Minister inspected exhibits of basic timber, bamboo, and rattan products and received explanations from responsible personnel.
He also provided guidance on necessary improvements. The workshop continued with discussions among participants on topics related to establishing and maintaining private forest plantations, harvesting and marketing timber, and exporting timber, bamboo, rattan products, and non-timber forest products.
In the afternoon, group discussions focused on ensuring a sustainable supply of raw materials from both Department and private plantations for basic timber-based industries, fostering continuous industrial growth, and enhancing export opportunities.
