Local Oil Sufficiency: New Oil Mill opened in Nay Pyi Taw

A new Oil Mill was opened in Phyoat Khwe Village of Nay Pyi Taw Pobbathiri Township on Wednesday. Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development U Hla Moe accompanied by Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman U Than Htun Oo, Deputy Minister U Myint Soe and officials attended the opening ceremony of the mill, jointly operated by Thar Tin Oo and Kyauk Sein Cooperative Associations.

After the ceremonial ribbon cutting event, Union Minister U Hla Moe unveiled the signboard of the mill and sprinkled the scented water. The Union Minister later made an opening speech, saying that the Head of State has given instructions to focus on domestic oil sufficiency and reducing the use of foreign currency.

Moreover, one of the economic objectives stated that "To spur the cultivation of oil crops to meet targeted production levels, thereby achieving domestic self-sufficiency in edible oil while striving towards the export of surplus oil.” Under these guidelines, the cooperative sector is prioritizing the cultivation and production of oilseeds for domestic oil sufficiency.

He added that the newly opened joint ventured facility could provide sufficiency of local oil consumption in Nay Pyi Taw while penetrate the market. The Union Minister stressed the need to expand cultivation of oil crops and to cultivate systematically in accordance with (4) factors such as seed, soil, water, and method to achieve the targeted yield.

He also urged to make arrangements to purchase the raw materials for the factory from local farmers and maintain the long-term operation of the factory. Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman U Than Htun Oo explained the status of oilseed farming activities within the Nay Pyi Taw Council area and the establishment of oil mills for domestic oil self-sufficiency.

Then, Chairman of Thar Tin Oo General Business Cooperative Association presented the factory construction records and the situation of mill operation and Union Minister fulfilled the necessary requirements and viewed round the factory. The construction of the oil mill started in May 2024 and completed in November. It can produce 504 visses of peanut oil per day, with more than 15,000 visses per month, and over 181,000 visses per year, with annual purchase of raw materials from over 3,500 acres of peanut plantations.
