
Efforts to combat illegal trade, overseen by the Illegal Trade Eradication Steering Committee, are being effectively implemented by the law.
On 15 October, three unregistered motorbikes in Magway and Thayet Districts, a Toyota Harrier which was carrying 70 gallons of smuggled diesel at the junction of Gwaygyo village in SinbaungweTownship, illegal timber weighing a total of 22.574 tonnes, in Pyinmana District were seized.
On 17 and 20 October, 6.53 tonnes of illegal charcoal and 3.87 tonnes of illegal timber in Kyonpyaw and Pathein Districts, and a Nissan Diesel truck which was carrying three types of consumer goods without proper documentation on the Kengtung detour were nabbed.
On 21 October, a Hyundai Starex which was carrying 0.732 tonne of illegal teak on the Yangon-Mandalay expressway in HleguTownship was confiscated.
In total, between 15 and 21 October, 11 arrests were made, resulting in the seizure of illegal items worth approximately 183 million Kyats. The Illegal Trade Eradication Steering Committee has reported that illegal trade is a significant barrier to the country’s economic development and has a profound impact on the socioeconomic sector. Therefore, the committee is committed to intensifying its efforts against illegal trade.
