Wildfires hit Portugal

At least two people were killed and 17 were injured by wildfires raging in west-central Portugal. The Aveiro district of Portugal faced a major crisis on Monday, as multiple wildfires caused smoke clouds to blanket the region as flames reached residential areas. Several homes have been destroyed by the flames.

Authorities are working to contain the fires and provide assistance to those being evacuated. On Sunday, the government declared an alert situation for the whole of mainland Portugal on Tuesday, due to the worsening danger of rural fires. The Portuguese government requested more eight more aircraft from the European Commission.
