Germany begins expanded to control migration

Germany has begun expanded border controls with all nine of its neighboring countries. The border checks are an attempt to tackle irregular migration and protect against extremism and other threats. 

The checks started on Monday and will initially run for six months. The federal government justifies this with the migration and security situation. Such controls are only permitted in the Schengen area as a last resort.
