Disaster Preparedness: Workshop on flood preventive measures in Myitkyina

The Ministry of Transport and Communications held a workshop on flood preventive measures in Myitkyina Township due to rising water level of Ayeyawady River at the Ministry.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Minister U Aung Kyaw Tun outlined the land utilization changes due to population growth and expansion of farmlands and residential areas, soil erosion caused by deforestation as well as the cross-section area reduction which leads to flood, river erosion and landslides.

He stressed that as Myitkyina Township is a flood prone city, flood protection measures must be conducted in advance to ensure the flood safety of the local residents. The meeting discussed the rescue measures during Myitkyina flood and aftermath of theĀ  flood, damage and losses of Myikyina Township and measures to improve water flow in Myitkyina.
