Authorities in east China’s Fujian Province have rescued 23 people, including 19 children, who were stranded on rocky islands after being pulled away from shore by treacherous waters whipped by a looming typhoon attack on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone off the coast of Fujian. Up to 23 people had been out on paddle boards when they were pulled away from shore by strong currents. Fujian raised the emergency response level for typhoons from Level IV to Level III on Tuesday in the face of Typhoon Gaemi, the third of this year.
