US Spokesperson Matthew Miller said the US State Department is "aware of the reports of the deaths of two US citizens in Bangkok" after six foreign nationals were found dead in a luxury hotel room in the Thai capital, with police suspecting they were poisoned. The State Department is “closely monitoring the situation” and is “ready to provide consular assistance,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
The dead were all of Vietnamese descent, two of them with U.S. citizenship and four with Vietnamese citizenship, Thailand's Prime Minister Thavisin said, adding that he had spoken with the Vietnamese ambassador. Thavisin went to the hotel and later told that the incident was neither a robbery nor a random assault, and that it should not affect Thailand’s lucrative tourism industry.
