63-kilometre ring roadproject for easing traffic jam in Kinshasa

With its 17 million inhabitants across 24 communes, travelling in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, remains a daily headache for millions of people.

To alleviate its traffic chaos,President Felix Tshisekedi launched the project of 63-kilometre ring road last month.Construction is estimated to last three years, at a cost of $300 million.An urban train link, called Metrokin, is also in the pipeline.

It is set to begin with the renovation of a 25-km stretch of railway line from Kinshasa central station in the north of the city, to Ndjili international airport on the eastern outskirts. For these projects, the Congolese State has signed an initial partnership agreement with the French company Alstom.
