A project in the United Arab Emirates involving Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. plans to start producing ammonia from 2027. The project is led by energy group ADNOC, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government.

The trading firm's investment funds will come in part from loans from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. Mitsui officials said they are working toward stable supplies of ammonia. The company also plans to produce a million tons of the chemical compound annually in the United States.
