Colombia to push for greater recognition of Afro-descendant communities at COP16

As organizer of COP16, scheduled for October 2024 in Cali, Colombia will work towards formal recognition of Afro-descendants in Latin America, Colombian vice-president Francia Marquez announced at a press conference. She added that Afro-descendant population is not included in any of the international instruments on the environment, climate change and diversity.

That’s why they try to promote the inclusion of the category of people of Afro-descendant in the agreement on biological diversity. COP16, the major United Nations conference on biodiversity, will be held from October 21st to November 1st in Cali where some 12,000 people are expected to attend.
