International Women’s Day was held in Dawei of Tanintharyi Region on 8th March in line with the theme of “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”.
At the event, the Chief Minister U Myat Ko said the United Nations adopted International Women’s Day in 1979 for women development. Myanmar laid down laws and policies through international commitments including Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women-CEDAW, and Sustainable Development Goals-SDG adopted by United Nations in 2015, and is implementing to uplift the role of Myanmar’s women.
The National Strategic Plan for the Advancement of Women - NSPAW Phase II is being drafted while efforts are being made to enact Anti-Violence against Women Law to effectively protect women and girls from sexual and gender-based violence.
The Chief Minister added that since the government is conducting to protect Myanmar women’s rights and to reduce the development gap between rural and urban areas, people and organizations need to cooperate in respective sectors.
